OVERVIEW

Banbury Cross was erected in 1859 to celebrate the marriage of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter. It was sited near one of Banbury's original crosses from which the nursery rhyme `Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross' was derived.
The Salt Way was a medieval route for the transport of goods from the Midlands, much
of which was salt used for meat preservation.
The Oxford Canal was opened in sections
from 1774 to 1790 and was for a time used for the transport of coal from Coventry
to Oxford and then to London via the River Thames.
