After a post on the Facebook site, I decided it was time to spruce up my iPod for running at the gym (still haven't the guts to listen to music while running outdoors)

What are your favourite tracks for gym/running/working out. My absolute favourites (not all the best pace, but brilliant at getting my butt moving) are:

  • Kanye West- Stronger
  • Christina Aguilara- Fighter
  • Rage Against the Machine- Killing in the Name
  • Black Eyed Peas- Pump It
  • A.R.Rahman- Jai Ho
  • Blur- Song 2
  • Eminem- Lose Yourself
  • Garbage- Push It
  • Arctic Monkeys- I Bet that You Look Good on the Dance Floor

Ok- so those are mine (looking at the list, I seem quite ANGRY- lol)- what are yours?

Ha, good post Claire. I'd definitely recommend running outdoors with music (while paying due care and attention of course...) I think it's one of the greatest feelings in the world to fight to get through a particularly hard bit of a run, and then a brilliant song comes on, and just fills you with exhilaration! It can also pick you up, just as you think you're sapped of energy.

I have got a playlist entitled "final push" which is designed to really get me firing for a final assault on a long run. It does usually work! It's full of similarly angry music so I don't think you should read too much into it!

I'll give a top 10(ish) in no particular order (there are a few similiarities with yours) - below!

Killing in the name - Rage against the Machine
Monster - the Automatic
Stay Positive - The Hold Steady
I predict a riot - Kaiser Chiefs
Fire - Kasabian
Our Velocity - Maximo Park
Reptillia - The Strokes
Seven Nation Army - White Stripes
Lose yourself - Eminem
Resolve - Foo Fighters
Paint it Black - Rolling Stones

I love the RATM track, but have a tendancy to forget myself and sing. Gawd- my gym, on a Sunday morning with the older ladies- faces turned in horror to the red faced bird on the treadmill F**K YOU- I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!

Love the recommendations Burtie- thanks. Also for the inspiration to actually give it a go. I know it helps my performance in the gym, but just feel vulnerable out of doors. Time to be brave....

I will check out that blog NOW, Alan- cheers

Oh- Alan

I am mortified- your friend has written: "Any playlist that starts with guff like "Pump It" by the Black Eyed Peas isn't even worth considering."

Well I didn't exactly start with it, but it was number 4! *hides quickly in shame*

Mmmm. Well you have a wide taste in something, Derek! ;)

As I've mentioned in these forums (fori?) before, I don't do gyms, dreadmills etc, and I don't run 'wired for sound' - partly for safety and partly because I enjoy running without unnecessary noise.

That said...

Come To This - The Sleepy Jackson (Girl, it;s a long time when you're runnin')
Hit the Ground Running - Doves (I hit the ground running fast)
Car Fiction - Echobelly (Run, run away - baby we can run away)
Bionic - Placebo (Harder, Faster... None of you can make the grade)
Unsatisfied - Nine Black Alps (Ten out of ten for a race already run)
Do or Die - Grace Jones (You make me run, run, run - chase me with a gun, I'll never give up - I got to do or die!)
Running Shoes - The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Meet me at the bottom, bring me my runnin' shoes... Don't tell nobody, when you see me passin' by)
Shoot Her If She Runs - Climax Blues Band (I'm gonna run to her house, take a razor and a gun - gonna cut her if she stands still, and I'll shoot her if she runs)
Blood Runs Hot - Spencer Davis (My blood runs hot and my fever high)
Let the River Run it's Course - The Alarm
Run on the Spot - Bentley Rythm Ace
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner - Iron Maiden (!)

I could go on, but I'll only embarrass myself further!

Oh, just one more...
We Walk - The Ting Tings (If it all goes wrong, we walk!)

Try running to Slayer shouting/singing out loud to God Hates Us All while running past a church full of people on a sunday morning not such a good choice

Air guitar and drums a must when running.....does that mean I'm a mad old bat as well?

like Dave,

i don't run to music (prefer to listen to my body!) but love his eclectic mix. Nine Black Alps: what happened to them (I had them tagged to be the new Nirvana...I'll never make a pundit)

And probably the real reason i don't run to music is I'm a bloke..... and we can't do multi-tasking!

Hee hee! Imagine if they had Michael Flatley and his pals performing beside the London Marathon course... chaos!

I can't believe I missed out 'Roadrunner' - by Bo Diddley but recorded by just about every man and his dog. And probably a few women too (Joan Jett?).

'I'm a roadrunner honey, and you can't keep up with me
Come on, let's race - baby, baby, you will see' etc...
