Hi all On Sunday I ran the Greater Manchester Marathon. Weather was ideal, cloudy and cool until the finish and the sun came out shortly afterwards. A well organised event witha nice course and good local support. I'll admit to be pretty nervous but after a few miles I was running strongly and went on well until about 22 miles when it got tough and the pace suffered accordingly. The last mile was a nightmare but kept going. Crosing the line still running was a great sense of achievment I wanted a sub four hour time and came in at 3:55:40 so I'm happy with that. Shame I couldn't keep the pace up for the last four miles but maybe that's normal for a marathon? Anyway, did anyone else run it and if so how did it go? All the best Andy |

Congratulations Andrew, sub-4 in your first marathon is a great achievement. I do think a marathon is a learning experience - once you get into the last 6 miles you're really entering the unknown! There will be plenty to take from it for next time! |

Thanks all, it certainly was a great feeling to cross the line. For a long time I always viewed a marathon as being beyond me - I'd always been so finished at the end of a half marathon - I always got knee pain. So I did a course of running coaching in Bristol which fixed my gait and I dont get pain anymore, so I figured I'd go for it. It's great to set a goal, do the training and achieve the goal. Under 3:40 is an excellent time Gordon, well done. I didn't see "superman" but saw some of the lead pack go past and they were certainly shifting. To be honest they didn't even look to be struggling which I guess is a mark of how tuned in and fit they are. To be honest though I was pretty impressed by the people who were at the back of the pack and probably 4-5 miles behind us at the 11 mile point. They were on for a long run and fair play to them for giving it some. All in all, not as bad as I feared and a positive result, will certainly run others. All the best Andy |
