Hi, thanks to everyone for their advice. I hydrated well....but still not quite enough on the day. Did a lot of sweating it out before hand, which did clear my chest quite a lot. Berocca was a good one as well, felt the difference from that. On the day (Sunday just gone), it was really hot. I went with the 2.00hour pacer, which was a challenge. Stayed with him until 12km, but could not quite maintain that pace. I could feel my chest tight and legs sore from not enough miles in the run up. I am very pleased with my result though, came in at 2.03....which was 6 minutes of my previous PB. I think that it has paid off being fairly okay with that sort of distance before and my muscles although really tired, remembered that they could do it. Roll on next year's Royal Parks....it was a fab run and a fab day. xx |

I've just run a half after a ten day nasty viral cold and sore throat. Things I tried were: salt gargles followed by hot honey and lemon, steaming my head, staying well hydrated, high dose vit c pills, lots of fruit and lots of sleep. All sensible but if yours is bacterial its the anti-bs that will do the most. Maybe don't push it on race day - just get round and recover, you've got an excuse about your time that everyone will understand. Hope that you manage to enjoy it and still get lots from the experience. Incidentally, my cold seemed to clear up almost during the race, but maybe its not comparable. |

Hi, I have the Royal Parks half marathon in a week. Have been suffering the past two weeks with tonsilitis and a chest infection. As a result, have not been able to log too many training miles. Will be on antibiotics until the night before the run. Does anyone have any remedies they can recommend that may speed / aid my recovery to make it round. There is no question of not running, as I am in the GOSH team, so am running for charity. I don't think I'll be setting a new PB, even though I'm not a fast runner, as my current PB is only 2hrs, 9 mins, but I do want to make it round by running, not staggering. Thanks. |
