I set my GRG shoe counter at 500 miles and off I went. No problem at all or so I thought and then about six weeks before my target race in the Spring (Reading HM) I began to get many foot problems. At first I just put it down to "too much running"....but then, I went for a sports massage and was told that I had mild plantar faciatis in both feet. I bought a new pair of running shoes (actually racing flats) and ran 5km in them before the big race. A big risk I know, but I had nothing to lose as a free massage an hour before the race had me writhing on the table in pain. Fortunately, the gel that was used in the foot massage dulled the pain enough for me to start and off I went. I got round and realised that it was my old trainers that had caused the problem - they were simply worn out at about 450 miles. I rested for about three weeks and am back into running in a new pair without problem. So, if you get foot problems - seriously consider the shoes you run in whatever the mileage and whatever your weight. For what it is worth I weigh 10st 4lbs so I am clearly not heavy on my feet.......

Yes Kate is right (isn't she always). 500 miles is a good figure but heavier runners may possibly need to change their shoes earlier or conversley if your mileage is predominantly off road they may last longer. |
