Arundel Castle
The route of the month for June has been chosen as Arundel and Angmering, which goes along the Monarch's Way and circumnavigates Angmering Park Land. The Bluebells are out very late this year so are still putting on a good show but there is also a lot of variety on this run, from the path alongside the River Arun with views of the Arundel castle, to South Downs Views to the pretty bluebell woodland surrounding Angmering. Pay and Display parking is available off The Causeway heading North towards the town or start from the bridge in the centre. Some of the paths can get muddy at times and some are stony so take care. There is a short stretch along a fairly quiet road with no pavement so be aware of this. The impressive Arundel castle was built at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel and overlooks the town and The River Arun alongside which the run starts. The Monarch's Way long Distance Footpath follows the route of the escape of Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. For six exciting weeks, and hotly pursued by the Parliamentary forces under Oliver Cromwell, he travelled first north, then south through the Cotswolds and the Mendips to the South Coast, and finally along the South Downs to Shoreham where he made his escape to France.
