Featured Route of the Month - January 2013
Brunel's Three Bridges (10.10 miles - Towpath) |

Two of the Three Bridges ....with railway below!
The Route of the Month for January has been chosen with an eye on the imminent arrival of the raft of spring marathons including the ever popular London Marathon and fairly new but also poular Brighton one marketed as 'London by the Sea'! Thus the route is a healthy 10 miles in length. It consists of an out and back leg with a 5 mile loop so can easily be extended to 15 or 20 miles by doing the loop more than once before returning to the start. This mostly mud free and pretty much flat route has a multitude of interesting features to keep you interested while you pound out the miles. It initially runs along the Grand Union Canal towpath climbing the Hanwell staircase of six locks with the Brunel's Three Bridges Ancient Monument at the top. The Three Bridges comprise a Road bridge passing over the canal which in turn passes above a railway. Well worth a look! The route returns via Osterley Park with a view of Osterley House before re-joining the canal for the finish at Syon Park, where you also see the lovely Syon House. At the start in Syon Park there is a large car park and great facilities here for a family day out. Apart from historic Syon House and gardens there is also a cafe, a children's soft play area (Snakes & Ladders), garden centre, fishing lake and reptile house. |
